Introducing the Team Data Dashboard

Run this on Day 5 during the Match Format Briefing, before simulation matches begin.

Time needed
12 – 15 min
Setup
Every team has one device open to the dashboard
Goal
Teams can enter a match, read their stats, and save
Before you start
Walkthrough script
2 min
Open the dashboard and pick your site
Say
"Everyone open the dashboard on your team's device. You should see 'Velocity Arena — Team Data Dashboard' at the top. In the top right corner, there is a dropdown that says a state name. Click it and pick our site."
Do
Wait until every team has the dashboard open with the correct site selected. Walk the room and check screens.
2 min
Name your team
Say
"At the top of the page you see a row of team tabs. Click on the one that is highlighted, then look just below it — you will see a text field where you can type your team name. Type your actual team name now. This is how you will find your data later, so spell it exactly how you want it."
Watch for
Teams typing silly names or leaving the default. The team name is how they load their data from any device. If it is misspelled later, they will not find it. Make them confirm it out loud: "Read your team name back to me."
2 min
Enter your stat loadout
Say
"Scroll down to the section that says 'Stat Loadout.' You see four stats: Speed, Power, Turning, Endurance. Each one has a number. Right now they are all set to 5. Your total has to equal 20 — you will see a bar at the bottom that tracks your budget. For now, leave them at 5. You will change them when you lock in your allocation."
Do
Point to the budget bar on your projected screen. Show what happens if you change Speed to 8 — the total goes to 23, the bar turns red, and a warning appears. Then set it back to 5.
3 min
Add a practice match to the match log
Say
"Scroll down to the Match Log. This is where you record every match you play. Let's add a fake one together so you know how it works. Set the Week to 1 — that means trial, it does not count in the standings. The Match number should already say 1. For Opponent, type 'Practice.' For Score, type '2-1'. For W/L, pick W. For Notes, type anything — 'first test run' is fine. Now click '+ Add row.'"
Do
Walk them through it live on your projected screen. After clicking Add row, point out: the row appears in the table above, the match number auto-incremented to 2, and the Week 1 row is dimmed because it is a trial.
Say
"See how that row is faded? That is because Week 1 matches are practice. They do not show up on the leaderboard. Starting Week 2, your matches count."
1 min
Save your work
Say
"Click the red Save button in the top right corner. You should see a message that says 'Saved.' The dashboard also auto-saves a few seconds after you make any change, but if you want to be sure, click Save. Your data is stored in the cloud, which means you can open it on any device by clicking 'Load Team' and typing your exact team name."
2 min
Show Load Team
Say
"One more thing. If you ever switch devices or need to pull up your data on a different computer, click the 'Load Team' button in the top right. Type your team name exactly as you spelled it, and your data appears. This is why spelling matters. If your team name is 'Iron Raptors' and you type 'iron raptors,' it will still find it. But if you type 'Iron Rapters,' it will not."
Do
Demo this live: click Load Team, type the team name you just saved, show the data loading. Then close the modal.
1 min
Close and transition
Say
"You now know how to enter a match, save your data, and load it on any device. You do not need to touch anything else on this page yet. The rest of the dashboard — the stat change justifications and the Four Views section — we will use later in the program. For now, your job after every match is: enter the week, the match number, the opponent, the score, whether you won or lost, and one note about what happened. That is it. No blanks."
Key rule
Establish this expectation now: no team starts their next match until their previous match row is complete in the dashboard. No blanks. This becomes the rhythm for Weeks 2-4.
After the walkthrough
Common issues in the first week
Team forgot to save
The dashboard auto-saves 3 seconds after any change if Sheets is connected. But if they closed the tab immediately after typing, data may be lost. Remind them: "If you see 'Saved' in the top right, you are good."
Team cannot find their data on a new device
They are probably misspelling their team name in Load Team. Have them check the exact spelling on the original device, or check the Google Sheet directly.
Two teams entered the same name
Their data will overwrite each other. Catch this on Day 1. Every team name must be unique within a site.
Students skip the Notes column
Notes are where the learning happens. "We lost" is not a note. "Our bot stopped moving at minute 2 — probably Endurance too low" is. Model this in the walkthrough. If a team's notes are blank after Week 2, ask: "What would your data tell you if you wrote down what happened?"
